The Renault company was founded in 1899 as Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Renault Fr\u00e8res by Louis Renault and his brothers Marcel and Fernand. Louis was a bright young engineer who had already designed and built several prototypes before working with his brothers, who had improved their business skills at their father's textile company. While Louis handled design and production, Marcel and Fernand ran the company.
\nThe first Renault car, the Renault Voiturette 1CV, was sold to a friend of Louis' father.<\/p>\n
In 1903, Renault started producing its own engines; until then, they had bought them from De Dion-Bouton. The big sales volumes came in 1905 when Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 des Automobiles de Place bought Renault AG1 cars to use as taxis. These vehicles were later used by the French army to transport troops during World War I, giving them the nickname \"Taxi de la Marne\". By 1907, a significant percentage of taxis in London and Paris had been built by Renault. Renault was also the best-selling foreign brand in 1907 and 1908 in New York. In 1908, the company produced 3,575 cars and became the largest car manufacturer in the country.<\/p>\n
According to the Organisation Internationale des Constructeurs d'Automobiles, Renault was the fourth largest automaker in the world in 2016. By 2017, the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance was the world's largest seller of light vehicles, knocking Volkswagen AG from the top spot.<\/p>\n
Renault is also known for its role in motorsports, particularly rallying, Formula 1 and Formula E.
