Car polishing

Does your car have some small scratches or dull spots? These things are almost impossible to prevent and have many different causes. A bush you drove too close to, a bunch of keys hitting your door or maybe even a manual wash. For this kind of superficial damage, polishing your car is the solution. You don't have to have your car repainted and the result is fantastic. A fresh new layer appears and your car looks like new again.

Polishing your own car

Will you take on the challenge of polishing your car yourself? Apart from putting in a lot of energy, it is important to keep the following things in mind:

The basis, a clean car

Because polishing is nothing more than very intensive rubbing of the surface of your car with a polishing pad and polishing agent, the car's paintwork must be carefully cleaned beforehand. Residual dirt, dust or sand can otherwise cause scratches during polishing. This is exactly what you want to avoid.

Washing

What do you need?
- 2 buckets
- Good car shampoo
- Washing glove
- Microfibre drying cloth

First of all, hose down your car thoroughly. Now wash your car thoroughly using the two-bucket method (one bucket with soap, one bucket with clean water) and a washing glove. Rinse the washing glove in the bucket of clean water.
A good car shampoo cleans better, smells good and glides more smoothly over the paintwork and is therefore safe to use. With a washing glove, it is easier to get into the corners. Moreover, a washing glove lifts up the dirt and holds the water well. This way you prevent possible new scratches.
Dry the car with a microfibre cloth. The soft and water-absorbent material does not damage the paintwork and does not leave streaks. Never use tea towels, towels or old T-shirts.

Clay

Washing only removes relatively simple and superficial contamination. Clay can be used to remove stubborn dirt, such as fly rust (small rust particles). Using clay in combination with clay lubricant, residual dirt is literally pulled off the paintwork. The clay becomes dirty and discoloured. Time to knead the clay a little. You don't get a "clean" piece of clay by kneading? Then replace the clay. By using a clay lubricant, you prevent so-called marring. Due to a combination of pressure, the coarseness of the clay and how clean the clay is (still), a very small unevenness in the paintwork can occur (marring). Don't worry, it will disappear again when you polish.
The result after claying is a clean and smooth surface that can now be polished.
Is the sun shining brightly? Before you start colouring, put your car in the shade.

Polishing

Polishes are available in various coarsities. Find out more about these products and never buy a coarser polish than necessary. Start with the coarsest polish, for example a medium polish, and finish with a finishing polish.
The right polishing pad distributes the polish better and makes polishing more effective. Polishing pads are available in different grooves. For example, combine a medium polish with a medium polishing pad.
When you have finished polishing, you can safely remove any residual polish from the paintwork using a microfibre cloth, without the risk of scratching it. When you have done this, there may still be some polishing oil left on the paintwork. Sometimes you can feel it, but you can hardly see it. The oil remains in microscopic scratches and only disappears after a few weeks. It is better to remove the polishing oil immediately with an IPA or panel wipe and see what the real result of the polishing has been. Moreover, wax, coating or sealant will perform much better.
Now protect your paintwork again with a coating, sealant or wax. By polishing, you have removed the old protective layer. These products often add extra shine. They make your car shine even harder. Apply these products with special applicator pads, small foam pads that are very suitable for applying these products.
Polishing by hand is a very labour-intensive job. Fortunately, there are polishing machines that make polishing a lot easier and the job can be done more quickly.
