Want to have your car wrapped? Explanations and addresses

Wrapping is very hot and has a wide range of applications. Apart from your kitchen, you can also have your car wrapped. But what exactly is car wrapping? In this article we will explain what car wrapping is, what the advantages are and what the possibilities are. At the bottom of the article you will find a list of professionals in your neighbourhood.

Car wrapping, what is that?

The partial or total covering of a car with wrap film (vinyl film) is called car wrapping. With the help of this special film, a car is completely wrapped or just partially stickered, so that a totally new look is created. This is possible because vinyl film is extremely malleable. This makes it possible to follow all the lines and shapes of your car. Besides the complete wrapping of a car, the so-called full body wrap, only (under-)parts of a car can be wrapped. Think of a roof, bumpers and mirror caps. Wrap film can be applied to all painted parts.

What are the advantages of car wrapping?

Car wrapping has several advantages:

A completely new look

Wrapping allows you to give your car a totally new and unique look in a relatively cheap way. Maybe you have seen enough of the current colour of your car or you want that trendy carbon look.
Wrapping is a temporary metamorphosis. You do not have to have your car permanently resprayed. Wrapping versus repainting is also cheaper because it is less labour-intensive. Just as easily as your car can be fitted with new film, the film can also be removed. All you need is a hot air gun and an adhesive remover (find out more about this beforehand). The original colour of the car will then reappear. Wrapping is therefore an inexpensive way to give your car a different colour and appearance.
Please note that you have to inform the RDW about the new appearance of your vehicle (i.e. a different colour). Use this link -> Colour matching bodywork RDW.  The same applies, of course, when you have the wrap removed again.

Protective layer

Wrapping can also be used preventively. By wrapping a car you protect the original paintwork of your car optimally because it blocks the ultraviolet sunlight. When you have the foil removed, the original paintwork is still fully intact. This optimal protection ultimately results in a higher sales value. On average, the service life of a wrap film is three to ten years. The service life depends on the quality of the wrap film, the type of film, the maintenance and environmental factors.

Advertising purposes

Instead of having a car lettered, a car can also be partially painted. In this way, it is very easy to advertise a company or a business. Images or the company logo can be printed on the vinyl film to be applied. And if the company logo changes or some other adjustment needs to be made? The film is easy to remove and in no time you are driving around with the right advertising or data again.

Car wrapping colours

Wrap film is available in various colours and designs. Due to the wide range of colours and styles, you can personalise your car even with minor adjustments. The result is a car with a unique appearance. For example, give your car the much sought-after carbon effect. Wrap film is available in the most unusual colours. Of course, this comes at a price. Wrap film in a "standard" colour like matt black or metallic red is cheaper than in a more exclusive colour. Of course, you don't have to wrap your entire car to achieve a special effect. As mentioned above, you do need to report a colour change to the RDW.

Can any car be wrapped?

Wrap around film can be applied to any smooth paint finish. However, if your car's paintwork has deep scratches, rust spots or porous areas, the film will not adhere or will not adhere well.

How should a wrapped car be maintained?

It is advised to wash wrapped cars by hand, but it is also possible to drive them through a car wash without brushes. If you do it carefully, you can even clean a wrapped car with a high-pressure sprayer.
Remove bird droppings as soon as possible. Just like regular paint, bird droppings eat into a wrap.
Has your car been given a carbon, satin or matt wrap? Never wax your car. Over time, it will make your car shine, which will detract from the intended effect.
Therefore, always use a product that is specifically intended for the respective wrap (shiny, matt, printed).

5 advantages of alloy wheels

Aluminium alloy wheels have become increasingly popular in recent years. Many car owners choose to replace the standard steel rims of their car with alloy rims. This can be an excellent choice. There are more advantages than one would initially expect. We discuss five advantages of alloy wheels.

Chic or flashy appearance

The main attraction of alloy wheels is, of course, their appearance. Aluminium alloy wheels are available in a variety of beautiful designs and colours. They can give your car that extra chic or just that extra sporty look that will make you stand out even more. You buy for example beautiful light metal rims at Online-Velgen.nl

Less chance of corrosion

Aluminium rims, provided they have had a good surface treatment, are less sensitive to corrosion than steel rims. As long as damage, for example from hitting a kerb, is avoided, aluminium rims can often last longer. But beware: alloy wheels with a bad paint treatment are more susceptible to corrosion than steel wheels.

Better dimensional accuracy

A steel rim is pressed and then welded together in a mould. In the production of an alloy rim, a special finishing process is used that ensures more precise dimensions and a more accurate weight. This ensures optimal balance and avoids unwanted vibrations while driving.

Better for life of tyres, braking system and wheel bearings

Compared to steel rims, thick-walled aluminium rims handle the heat generated by the tyres and braking better. They absorb and dissipate this heat better. This ensures that the operating temperature of the tyres, the braking system and the wheel bearings remains lower. As a result, the life span of these parts can be extended compared to use in combination with steel rims.

Less distortion after absorption pressure

It is wrongly said that aluminium rims are not as strong as steel rims. It is indeed the case that aluminium has greater flexibility than steel. However, this also ensures better absorption of pressure. As a result, an alloy rim deforms less quickly if it has to absorb a blow than a steel rim.
It is true that aluminium rims require more maintenance than steel rims if you want to ensure that they remain beautiful and last as long as possible. But that is probably what you are prepared to pay for when you invest in classy alloy wheels.

Car polishing, what you should know

Car polishing

Does your car have some small scratches or dull spots? These things are almost impossible to prevent and have many different causes. A bush you drove too close to, a bunch of keys hitting your door or maybe even a manual wash. For this kind of superficial damage, polishing your car is the solution. You don't have to have your car repainted and the result is fantastic. A fresh new layer appears and your car looks like new again.
In this article you can read all about the polishing of your car and which professional you can go to in your area.

Polishing your own car

Will you take on the challenge of polishing your car yourself? Apart from putting in a lot of energy, it is important to keep the following things in mind:

The basis, a clean car

Because polishing is nothing more than very intensive rubbing of the surface of your car with a polishing pad and polishing agent, the car's paintwork must be carefully cleaned beforehand. Residual dirt, dust or sand can otherwise cause scratches during polishing. This is exactly what you want to avoid.

Washing

What do you need?
- 2 buckets
- Good car shampoo
- Washing glove
- Microfibre drying cloth

First of all, hose down your car thoroughly. Now wash your car thoroughly using the two-bucket method (one bucket with soap, one bucket with clean water) and a washing glove. Rinse the washing glove in the bucket of clean water.
A good car shampoo cleans better, smells good and glides more smoothly over the paintwork and is therefore safe to use. With a washing glove, it is easier to get into the corners. Moreover, a washing glove lifts up the dirt and holds the water well. This way you prevent possible new scratches.
Dry the car with a microfibre cloth. The soft and water-absorbent material does not damage the paintwork and does not leave streaks. Never use tea towels, towels or old T-shirts.

Clay

Washing only removes relatively simple and superficial contamination. Clay can be used to remove stubborn dirt, such as fly rust (small rust particles). Using clay in combination with clay lubricant, residual dirt is literally pulled off the paintwork. The clay becomes dirty and discoloured. Time to knead the clay a little. You don't get a "clean" piece of clay by kneading? Then replace the clay. By using a clay lubricant, you prevent so-called marring. Due to a combination of pressure, the coarseness of the clay and how clean the clay is (still), a very small unevenness in the paintwork can occur (marring). Don't worry, it will disappear again when you polish.
The result after claying is a clean and smooth surface that can now be polished.
Is the sun shining brightly? Before you start colouring, put your car in the shade.

Polishing

Polishes are available in various coarsities. Find out more about these products and never buy a coarser polish than necessary. Start with the coarsest polish, for example a medium polish, and finish with a finishing polish.
The right polishing pad distributes the polish better and makes polishing more effective. Polishing pads are available in different grooves. For example, combine a medium polish with a medium polishing pad.
When you have finished polishing, you can safely remove any residual polish from the paintwork using a microfibre cloth, without the risk of scratching it. When you have done this, there may still be some polishing oil left on the paintwork. Sometimes you can feel it, but you can hardly see it. The oil remains in microscopic scratches and only disappears after a few weeks. It is better to remove the polishing oil immediately with an IPA or panel wipe and see what the real result of the polishing has been. Moreover, wax, coating or sealant will perform much better.
Now protect your paintwork again with a coating, sealant or wax. By polishing, you have removed the old protective layer. These products often add extra shine. They make your car shine even harder. Apply these products with special applicator pads, small foam pads that are very suitable for applying these products.
Polishing by hand is a very labour-intensive job. Fortunately, there are polishing machines that make polishing a lot easier and the job can be done more quickly.

The professionals

Is all the hard work not producing the desired result? Then why not leave the polishing to a professional? The costs of car polishing often do not outweigh the number of hours you have to spend on it yourself. The price of car polishing starts from € 99.
In the overview below, you can find a professional near you who would like to take care of your car. Let it shine!

Replace front and rear axle drive? What you need to know

Gaiters - you may not hear about them very often. Yet they are very important car parts. Driving around with damaged homokinetic joints can be life-threatening in some cases. What does this car part do? How do you know that it needs to be replaced and how much does it cost to replace a joint pinion? We tell you more!

What are homokinets?

Hubs are also known as pinion joints or homokinetic joints. It is the car part that connects the wheel to the drive shaft. It is an ingeniously designed joint that ensures that the wheels and the axle always rotate at the same speed, even when steering or taking a bumpy sandy road.

The part that often shows defects first is the sleeve that surrounds the homokineet. This shaft sleeve contains grease for the proper, smooth operation of the clutch. When the sleeve is damaged and gets torn, this grease leaks. Dirt also gets into the hub axle.

Crankshaft symptoms in the event of damage

Crank joints broken? The sooner you get there, the better. This will not only save you high maintenance costs, but will also be safer. In order to help you spot defective parts in time, we have listed the damaged joint pin symptoms for you.

Ticking sound when steering

Do you hear a ticking or clicking noise when you steer and accelerate at the same time? There is a good chance that one of the coil joints is broken. When in doubt, find an empty parking space where you have the space to drive in circles in reverse. Accelerate a little at a time. If the ticking gets louder, there is probably a defective axle box.

A grease spot

If the axle cover is damaged, grease will leak out. This grease ends up on the hub axle, the wheels and the tyres. Do you suspect that one of the joints is broken? Then don't conclude that you are wrong, because you don't see a grease spot on the wheels. In the beginning these grease spots are small. Only when the axle cover is damaged further and more grease is leaking, you will see this on the wheels. If there is a large grease spot, the car part is probably already so badly damaged that not only the axle cover, but also the homokineet itself and maybe the drive shaft need to be replaced.

Shock or vibration of the car

Homing joints in good condition ensure that the wheels and axle have the same speed. If a homokinetic clutch is not doing its job properly anymore, this will cause jolting or vibrating. In the beginning, you only notice this when you make a sharp turn and accelerate. The more the car part is damaged, the more severe the jolting and vibrating becomes. Eventually, you will also feel it when driving in a straight line at a constant speed. At this stage, driving with a broken hub cap becomes really dangerous. The joint is so badly damaged that it can now come loose, leaving your wheel disconnected from the axle. Your car becomes uncontrollable.

Replace front drive shaft - the sooner, the better

A seriously damaged axle box causes life-threatening situations on the road. No wonder that a cracked axle cover results in an MOT-approved car. When you hear a ticking or clicking noise for the first time while steering or accelerating, you do not have to take the emergency lane immediately. However, it is important to go to the garage as soon as possible. If you get there quickly, there is a chance that only the axle cover needs to be replaced. This is relatively cheap.

Does the homokineet itself also need to be replaced? That is a more expensive option. Often the axle is also replaced. The axle has to be dismantled anyway to replace the homokinets and often the drive shaft itself is also worn out. To prevent having to go to the garage again within six months, it is best to buy a completely new driveshaft. Sometimes you have no choice. Not all drive shafts are supplied separately. They are only for sale as part of the drive shaft. Since replacing the complete driveshaft is a very expensive undertaking, many people choose to get rid of their car.

Camshaft replacement costs

Replacing the axle cover of a joint pin usually costs between 90 and 150 euros. Replacing a single drive pinion joint costs between 400 and 750 euros. Replacing a drive shaft costs between 430 and 1200 euros, and replacing both drive shafts can cost between 760 and 2200 euros.

The large price differences for the same repairs are related to the cost of parts for specific car makes and models, but also to the workshop's labour costs.

Top 10 most fuel-efficient petrol cars

Buying an economical petrol car is not only about the purchase price! But also all additional costs such as maintenance, fuel and insurance. Take a look at our Top 10 most fuel-efficient cars! With the current high petrol prices, these are definitely worth considering.

1. Suzuki Celerio

The Suzuki Celerio is an urban five-door car that is 3.60 metres long. Introduced in February 2014, it is considered Suzuki's smallest car and is an alternative to small city cars such as the Toyota Aygo, the Opel Karl or the Hyundai i10. The car distinguishes itself by its excellent use of the space on board: the boot holds 254 litres. This is worthy of a car from the B-segment and is also higher than that of its city rivals. The Suzuki Celerio is only available with a single three-cylinder 1.0 aspirated petrol engine. This engine develops 68 hp and a maximum torque of 90 Nm, which goes to the front through a five-speed manual transmission. The Suzuki Celerio has a consumption of 4.7 litres/100 km.

2. Hyundai Ioniq

The Hyundai Ioniq is a hybrid model that combines sporty feel, driving smoothness and consumption of 3.4 litres. It was presented at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show and is the direct competitor of the Toyota Prius. The Hyundai Ioniq is 4.5 metres long, just over 1.6 metres wide and weighs just 1,254 kilograms. The first thing that surprises from the first few miles is the discreetness of the new hybrid vehicle. You can hear almost nothing in the Ioniq, even when the automatic gearbox is spinning the combustion engine around. On the one hand, the car is equipped with a 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine 'GDI' that delivers 103CV and 146 Nm of torque, while for support it has an electric motor of 43CV and 170 Nm of torque. The total power output is 141CV and petrol consumption is 4.1 litres/100 km. Thanks to the combination of both engines, this car achieves as low a fuel consumption as the Prius and that makes it a real threat to the Toyota hybrid.

3. Toyota Yaris Hybrid

A jury of 59 specialist journalists from all over Europe awarded the Toyota Yaris Hybrid named Car of the Year 2021. This electric hybrid is equipped with the fourth generation of Toyota's electric hybrid technology. This means driving with low emissions and remarkable fuel consumption: 4.8 litres/100km. The electric motor and combustion engine work together with the aim of efficient travel. On short city trips, you can drive most of the time in EV mode, i.e. 100% electric. The vehicle is equipped with a self-rechargeable battery that draws energy from braking or from the energy released by the combustion engine. So you don't need plugs for recharging. Low emissions, fuel saving, space optimisation, design, technology and safety are just some of the strongest points of this small economical car!

4. Nissan Pixo

The Nissan Pixo is a five-door, four-seater car, 3.6 metres long, launched in June 2009. It is a city car with an affordable price and an economical engine: a 1.0 three-cylinder with 65 hp at 6,000 rpm, which consumes 4.6 litres per 100 km and emits only 103 g/km of CO2. The consumption in the city is 5.3 litres. It has a five-speed manual transmission and optionally a four-speed automatic. This small economical car is basically the same as the Suzuki Alto. Both in design and finish it is a simple car but with a quality that is more than good for its segment. Striking options are air conditioning, ESP, metallic paint and curtain airbags.

5. Kia Niro

The Kia Niro combines qualities: it has a size (4.36 m) close to the Nissan Qashqai (4.38 m) and Peugeot 3008 (4.45 m) and is comfortable everywhere, even with the family. This small fuel-efficient car combines a 1.6-litre petrol engine with an electric one with a total of 141 hp. The hybrid model has a classic look, but is well thought out and well made. And the space reserved for passengers in the rear is very generous for a vehicle of this size. Apart from the economic aspect associated with lower consumption, buying a hybrid car remains an economically responsible act for many. The petrol consumption is estimated at 5.6 litres/100km. The other advantage remains the ability to drive quietly and without fuel from time to time. However, even when driving economically, it is difficult to exceed the 2 kilometres of autonomy in 100% electrically.

6. Toyota Prius

More than two decades ago, this vehicle was born as an alternative and now it has become a necessity to help the environment. Today, the Toyota Prius Hybrid thanks to an impressive fuel consumption of only 4.2 litres per 100 km is known as the most economical petrol car of this moment from Toyota. The 2020 Prius offers plenty of luggage space for sudden adventures or planned trips. If 65.5 cubic feet of space with 50 folding seats isn't enough to carry all your stuff, the luggage cross bars are available to help. And with its available AWD- e, the Prius helps you go as far as your imagination allows. With the available 11.6-inch HD multimedia screen and ideal musical accompaniment with Premium JBL® 51 Audio, you'll turn all your journeys into a true sensory adventure. And to take your driving experience to the next level, the available colour HUD projects important information onto the windscreen.

7. Daihatsu Cuore

The latest Daihatsu Core was launched in 2006. It has a length of barely 3.46 metres. This car is equipped with a front-wheel drive transverse engine. Similarly, the model is marketed in a hatchback body style with three and five doors. In Japan, the vehicle is marketed with a displacement limited to 660 cc, although in the case of the first two generations of the Daihatsu Cuore, the displacement drops to 550 cc. However, in European and Western countries, this small fuel-efficient car is still sold with engines up to 1,000 cc. Petrol consumption is estimated at 4.6 litres/100 km. The Daihatsu Cuore is a dream car: it is tough, reliable and gives you years of driving pleasure. Smart, elegant and remarkable are three characteristics that are mentioned in the description of the Daihatsu Cuore and that are confirmed by many satisfied drivers. The Cuore is the ideal family car, both spacious and comfortable. This means a great sense of safety and confidence for you as a driver.

8. Citroen C1

The Citroen C1 is a model with an urban character that was first launched in 2005. Developed thanks to the collaboration between the PSA Group and Toyota, the commercialisation of the second generation began in 2014. As an urban vehicle, the Citroën C1 is an excellent option thanks to its length of less than 3.5 metres and an interior sufficient for four passengers. The available equipment is enriched by new elements, such as the 7-inch touchscreen, keyless entry and start, a huge electric canvas roof on Airscape versions, the automatic city braking system and Lane Departure Warning. The engine range of this small fuel-efficient car includes an interesting 1.0 VTI with 68bhp of power that can be ordered with a manual gearbox or a robotic ETG with somewhat rough handling. The most performance-oriented option uses the 1.2 VTI with 82 CV and exclusively manual gearbox. The C1's light body moves with great ease and also consumes very little: 3.7 litres/100 km.

9. Toyota Corolla Hybrid

The Toyota Corolla Hybrid is certainly not the most exciting. And certainly not the sportiest. But if you're looking for a trouble-free, fuel-efficient compact car that will last as long as you want it to, then the Toyota Corolla Hybrid is worth considering. The reality is that you don't buy a car like this for its dynamic performance, but for its ability to drive reliably and economically. With a single full tank, you can cover almost 1,000 kilometres. The car has an average consumption of 4.5 litres per 100 kilometres. Like all hybrid vehicles, the Corolla is more economical in the city than on the highway. Equipped with a 1.8-litre 4-cylinder engine and an electric motor, the vehicle has a total output of 121 PS. Add to that a tiny 1.3 kWh battery that allows for a very short electric drive, but mainly supports the petrol engine, and you can understand why consumption is so low. Since this is a traditional hybrid, note that most of the charging is done by recovering the braking energy, there is no need to plug in.

10. Škoda Citigo

Skoda chose a mini city car, the Citigo, to become the first 100% electric model in its history. With its 36.8 kWh battery, the Skoda Citigo-e iV can travel 265 km (WLTP) on one charge. Above all, it is one of the cheapest electric city cars on the market. The Citigo iV shares its technical underbelly with the Volkswagen e-Up and Seat e-Mii, which also have a 36.8 kWh battery, implying a range of 265 km in the WLTP cycle. With such capacity, this small fuel-efficient car with a fuel consumption of 4.4 litres/100 km can broaden its horizons beyond the city, especially since its relatively small batteries can be recharged to 80% in 1 hour on a high-speed terminal (40 kW) via the CCS (Combined Charging System) charger. On a wallbox, a comparable recharge takes 4 hours, and on an enhanced household socket (2.3 kW) in 12 hours and 37 minutes. Apart from some upholstery and specific instruments, the interior is similar to that of a Citigo Thermal. Aesthetically, the Citigo-e iV does not differ from its thermal sister. The luggage space has been retained: 250 litres are available. This can be increased to 923 litres when the bench is folded down.
